I have just installed a dual USB charging point into the back of my T4 Transporter.
These ports are becoming very popular as most electronic devices are charged via USB these days, so it makes sense to have a charging point in your car or van.
As I am always out and about with the my phone and GoPro camera, I thought it was about time I fitted a USB charging point so that I can charge both items directly from the leisure battery.
I sourced this dual USB point from eBay, and it cost around £14. It came pre-wired with an inline fuse, so it was ready to be fitted straight out the box.
As you will see in the video above, in my case I had to extend the wires to reach the leisure battery, which didn’t take to long to do if you have the tools to do it – in this case a crimper for the electrical terminals. A hole saw is also required to fit the USB port into whatever surface you are mounting it in.
I chose to leave the USB ports live all the time, but you can fit a switch in-line so you can turn the USB point off at any time. I may end up doing this in the future as I expand the electric system in the back of the van.
So have a look at the video above, its a pretty straight forward job, it took me around 30 minutes to install the USB ports. Most of that time was due to having to extend the wires, and dismantle part of the interior to get at the area I wanted to fit it too.
